According to Columbia Encyclopedia, culture is the totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought. These patterns, traits, and products considered as the expression of a particular period, class, community, or population: Edwardian culture; Japanese culture; the culture of poverty, and for example the malaysian malay culture, the malays eat with their bare hands on the floor. These patterns, traits, and products considered with respect to a particular category, such as a field, subject, or mode of expression: religious culture in the Middle Ages; musical culture; oral culture. The predominating attitudes and behavior that characterize the functioning of a group or organization.
For me, the word 'culture' indicating about where we are coming from and what we are about, so other people can size us up and decide what to do next. It is a way of marking out what makes us different. For example, Malaysian culture is a mixture of Malay, Chinese and Indian, where each of them have speak different languages, celebrate different festivals and more.
Culture is a way of life - a set of ideas, beliefs, customs and behaviour that are shared by people living in a specific place and time. (www.pinellascountry.org). It is transmitted from one generation to the next through a complex learning process.
According to John H. Bodley (1994), culture involves at least 3 components: What people think, what they do and the material products they produce. Basically, he is saying that the behavioural patterns of a society is the culture of the society. For eg. wearing sarong is the culture of the malays.

Culture is a way of life. A community who believes that they want to be united together and express their thoughts and feelings in a same manner within the community .In my culture, Nepalese always respect the elders by bowing down to the elder’s feet to respect and getting blessings from them .Basically I would like to say that overall each individual have their own culture where they feel comfortable.
Basically it depends on one’s point of view regarding this matter but personally based on my understanding culture can be defined as the habits which one’s practiced in their daily life due to the traditions and beliefs which they are brought up and they tend to apply what has been taught to them by their families and peers in the society. Besides that, from the aspects of communication is also a form of culture. For instance, Malaysian communities are well known for its ‘namby-pamby’ and well behaved attitude while communicating with others. Besides that it is also related with the way we dressed up, the language we speak and what we do for fun.
Lets see, culture. Culture is something that you believe in and follow it. In addition to that, Culture also can be obtain when your parents teaches it and depends if we wanted to follow it.
For example, for Islams, its out culture that we are needed to pray five times a day. There is also that when you want to move in front of the elders, you need to at least bow down a bit while moving in front of them as a sign of respect.
“Culture is a traditonal way of expressing happiness; showing a negative or positive understanding of ethical values in a society or community of common traditions.Culture is the way of life of a particular society or group of people, including patterns of thought, beliefs, behavior, customs, traditions, rituals, dress, and language, as well as art, music, and literature.
Does anyone actually care about culture this days??? Culture is the way of life of a people, including their attitudes, values, beliefs, arts, modes of perception, and habits of thought and activity. Cultural features of forms of life are learned and pass from our great grandparents or a group of people from past.
Truthfully, and sad as it may seem, yes.... cultural influences are swayed by new ideals/technology. And they die a slow death. Most tribes i knew seldom practices their culture now, by educating them, their future generation slowly ignores what their earlier ancestors taught them. What is left are but little amount of their cultural trait... And a small token of it.
According to The World Book Dictionary, there's quite a number of definitions of culture. But to relate to what we are discussing in class, culture is the civilization of a given people or nation at a given time or over all time that includes its customs, its arts and its conveniences.
In our country, Malaysia, we have a mixture of many different cultures like the Malay culture, the Chinese culture and the Indian culture, just to name a few. A simple example of a Malay culture would be taking our shoes off before entering the house. Maybe anyone of you fellow classmates would like to share their culture?
In my opinion, i think that culture is kinda mesh together and have characteristics o two or more cultures, which would be kinda cool.. Did anyone think about it?
I think culture evolves. We the younger generations tend to develope our own culture.I agree with manesh that technology and new ideas do influence our cultural background. Some parts of cultural aspects dies but some dont.I still eat with my bare hands and whenever im in kampung i tend to adapt to the whole situation.we r all cultured people.I listen to Beethoven and Chopin and people tend to judge me for being too westernized. Its not about being westernized or whatever but more to a certain interest and passion.I listen to my traditional malay music and i absolutely love 'keroncong' and at the same time if i feel like listening to Pavarotti, i can always do so.I think we must preserve our culture as it will always be a reminder of whor we really are and not lose that identity
yes culture can die because if people did not practice the culture, it will die slowly.for example,in hindu culture girls must tie up their hair when going to the temple.the hindus belief that bad luck will occur if the hair strands fall on da ground and it's stepped on by others.nowadays young girls are not practising this particular culture.this proves that the culture is dying slowly.
based on my understanding the term namby pamby is used to represent one's attitude which they practised in their daily life, for instance communicating politely with others'instead of being rude. For more information you may view on this page...namby-pamby
i do agreed that a culture might die if we as the young generation do not practised it any longer. for example most of the youngsters nowadays are practising the modern lifestyle without giving a deeper thought to their culture, whereby gradually they tend to forget their own culture.
for me...culture is a symbol to show who we are, for example,Malaysians have their own culture..English also have their own culture..so,from here it sets the mind that we are living in our own ways of life. Without culture, we are not evolved with the ways of culture itself from our nationalities.
Culture also develops the nation itself too and without it,we are 'ketinggalan zaman'..isn't that right??
for the conclusion,it is basically on about our own beliefs, behaviours as in social learning and the knowledge itself from us..
well for me,culture involves not only in english. It is actually happens on behaviour and also on tradition it self. Each individuals have their own way of speaking. For ana example, kelantanese speaks english in different way; "air suam" is being pronounced as "I swear".Basiclly, culture is the way of your life which been produced.
Yes, it can be prevented if everyone starts to appreciate their own culture and practice it. Then, they should not ignore their culture just because it is not cool and trendy like the modern culture.
a culture can die if society stops practicing it or simply replace it with another culture. Maybe we could mix it all together and balance it out if we want to keep the culture alive. Maybe a fusion of Malay and Western culture. I think this is what's happening now in Malaysia. A lot of people are adapting a more Western culture and slowly without realizing it leaving their own culture behind.
Culture is the symbol and identity of a group. It differs by continents(The west n east), by race n ethnic (the indian n the Chinese), and by religious practises (Muslim and Taoist). The product of a culture can be seen through music, food, clothing, dances, languages, etc.
When a person moved away from his/her culture and embraced another, he will become disidentified from his own group.A person may be a Malay but he may not speak, dress, or act like a Malay (stereotypically).
The younger generation didn't seem to see the importance of preserving their tradition. Beliefs change over time...so does culture. In the past, the Chinese believe in honouring the dead as they believe it will play a role in the descendant's well-being and fortune. Hence they will offer prayers and find a good burial place for their ancestors.
A culture dies when beliefs changes and it is no longer in practise.
culture is something that has been introduced to us since young, we cant learn culture in school but we can recognize different cultural backgrounds from various religions. i think the youngsters these days DO NOT appreciate culture because they think its waste of their time, and some even against certain cultures. the word culture will soon be alien to the generation that has yet to come. (srry for not participating earlier)!!!!
And I read all the 32 other comments, and I'm the last one to talk, culture brings different meaning to different people, from the Colombian Encyclopedia to John H. Bodley, but "according to the research" I've made, culture also means the evolution of the development of society. Well, I really don't know what that really means but that could means the process that took place on human evolution, from the way we live, talk and eat and sleep...err.... our behaviour in short!!! Different region represented by different way of living or the lifestyle. For example, the lifetysle of the Chinese and the Indians, you could see by they way they eat, the former uses the chopstick while the latter uses hands, and also see their speech pattern and language, for me this is called culture, it does not formed yesterday but evolutes from way back in time... Of course culture dies, when a language dies, you can see an example from the life of Ishi The Last Yahi...
