Taboo is a ban or an inhibition resulting from social custom or emotional aversion.
The few examples are:-
1) Restrictions on the things that may be eaten such as halal and haram foods. 2) Restrictions on showing body parts. 3) Taboos on illegal drugs and addictions to legal drugs such as alcohol.
Taboo is prohibition of an action based on the belief that such behaviour is either too sacred and consecrated or too dangerous and accursed for ordinary individuals to undertake. Example, Indian girls wearing short pants and short skirts in public. “This is not indian culture!”. Indian girls wearing short skirts and short pants in public are considered to be ‘taboo’?? There would even be a possibility that when a normal hot Brahmin religious girl wears a top and a short skirt, there would be a ’slutty impression’ on this girl and she would definitely be in the waiting list of some pervert Indian predators. Simple conversation between an Indian Mom and Girl. Mom: Don’t wear like that, you look too sexy and all the boys will stare at you. Girl: (Amma)Mommy, puhhhleaseee lar! Mom: You better listen to me… Girl: Yea right!
A ban or an inhibition resulting from social custom or emotional aversion.
For example, In Malaysia it is common for couples to hold hands in public. Many would regard it as a sign of ‘love' but the Malaysian community consider this behaviour as taboo. Here is a simple conversation between a couple:
GF: Why you don’t wanna hold my hand? BF: Look at that Indian family, they are staring at us… GF: So what? What do you care if they stare?? BF: No da, they will see one kind… GF: &*@^@#@@^*#
Taboo are no-nos. Things that should be avoided in conversations as it could stir emotional discomfort. The feeling of discomfort could due to the society/religion norms, values, and beliefs. A society may place high value on chastity hence will forbid any behaviour that could lead to the violation of it. Some people find that sexy dressing is appalling as they directly link 'showing too much skin' to sexual 'indecency'. Taboo that society imposed on the members could sometimes cripple the freedom of expression as people are too scared to do the 'wrong' thing.
Humans tend to do many things including things that we can’t even imagine of. We talk, laugh, cry, kiss and so and so. But when the ‘culture’ of one human being came into the picture, there would be some rules that one should be and shouldn’t be, and that is what this article is going to be about.
We, the Malaysian community, have our own set of ‘rules’ that need too be obey by us. These rules are invisible as they were set by no one, but automatically it would be perceived as “Shouldn’t’s of Malaysian citizens” and surprisingly until now, it is still being followed by many. Now, let me list down three (3) things that I believe, would be considered as ‘taboo’ for according to the malaysian scenario. For those kiddies, ‘taboo’ means some sort of a prohibition or a restriction. Please don’t take that word seriously as the things that I am going to list down will be things that will usually be observed by some nerd kiddies, kelevis, mamees, mamas and not forgetting our very own religious freaks and the condemnation that will be poured out by them.
1) Holding hands in public It is common for couples to hold hands in public. Many would regard it as a sign of ‘love’ and/or ‘protection’, be it for couples or for a family. But still, many
couples would be shy to hold each other hands in public due to the public stare that they would be getting, the same stare that you will be getting when you encounter an Indian in a very-less-Indian population area. Note: The ‘public’ in previous sentence refers to the Malaysian Indian community. Even in colleges or schools, we could see chinese couples holding each other hands without even thinking on what the other people ‘might say’ but some of our kiddie couples would never fail to imagine all sort of things before deciding to hold their partner’s hand, including of ‘What if others see?”, “What would they be thinking” and etc. Why is that so?
GF: Why you don’t wanna hold my hand? BF: Look at that Indian family, they are staring at us… GF: So what? What do you care if they stare?? BF: No da, they will see one kind… GF: &*@^@#@@^*#
2) Kissing in public 1 in every 10000 individual would at least dare to kiss their partner in their cheek, lets say in an Indian-crowded mall. Talking about kissing on the cheek, how about kissing on the lips? Why is it that when a girl kisses her boyfriend’s cheek, there would be a group of other Indians staring at them, gossiping about them and labeling them as ’showing off’. If one is to kiss his/her partner on the lips, what do you think will be the reaction of the surrounding typical Indians?
3) wearing short pants and short skirts in public “This is not our culture!”. That would be the most famous answer given by some individuals when asked to comment on girls wearing short skirts and short pants in public. Should girls keep on adhering to this ‘rule’, that wearing short skirts and short pants in public are considered to be ‘taboo’? There would even be a possibility that when a normal hot-Brahmin-religious-girl wears a top and a short skirt, there would be a ’slutty impression’ on this girl and she would definitely be in the waiting list of some pervert Indian predators.
Mom: Don’t wear like that, you look too sexy and all the boys will stare at you. Girl: Ama Mommy, puhhhleaseee lar! Mom: You better listen to me… Girl: Yea right!
What about tattoos? I think it is a taboo especially here in Malaysia. Even in the US, people will look at a person covered in tattoos differently. Some have it because of art but some have it because it is in their culture and tradition like in tribes where they see tattoos as a form of spirit and will give them great powers and warriors.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to your believes, culture and the norm. If it's outside of that circle, then it can be consider as a taboo.
A taboo is a strong social prohibition against words, objects, actions, or discussions that are considered undesirable or offensive by a group, culture, society, or community. Breaking a taboo is usually considered objectionable or abhorrent. Some taboo activities or customs are prohibited by law and transgressions may lead to severe penalties. Other taboos result in embarrassment, shame and rudeness(law, morality, ethics, manners, politics, religion, race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, handicaps, class, creed, ones' occupation, finances, and groups of people as a whole).
Taboo is a way of actions , thoughts and a way of life where we are prohibited to talk ,do and associate with.As for instance, in nepalise culture, we are not supposed to use left hand as it is considered to be dirty and impure. Public displays of affection is a big no-nos. Clothes should be covered and not to show to much flesh.
Taboo is a no no things to those who live in a society or culture. A taboo to one culture is not to a culture. For example, chinese associates black with bad luck, a colour that would be avoided as far as possible. However, it is not so in a Malay society.
"Taboo" is not found in our daily life but also in our study. Words like 'understand' n 'think' are taboo words that should NEVER NEVER be used in lesson plans, as they do not show observable and measurable actions on the part of students. Basically, they show no literacy output as prove of being literate.
Taboo is things which are considered offesive in some culture... Taboo are also restricted by the laws and could be punished if found guilty. For example, showing lewd signs at people are taboo. Another example taboo are wearing slippers in temples are also taboo... So, in the Malaysian context, for example, kissing in the public are considered taboo!!!
