ReplyDeleteVideo Clip presented by Shah n company told of the title "TABOO" plain n clear. Well done guys.
ReplyDeletebasically i enjoyed the both groups' presentation.
ReplyDelete1. Briefly explain the aim of the presentation.
group 4- to create a deeper understanding about how english can become one of the world languge.
group 5-the differences which can be found between taboo and euphemism.
2. Do you think the group achieved their aim? yes/no. Explain.
yes, froup 4 and 5 was able to divert our mind by adding relevant examples to made their presentation more interesting to be watched.
for instance, group 4 come up with the differences on grammar and phonological aspects and was able to explained why english is flexible. and group 5 on the other hand, was focussing more to the play of the video clip in which it shows the 'taboo language'and action been used by the youngsters while communicating with the eldery.
3. What was the most interesting/boring part of the presentation? Explain.
group 4-the ending part of their presentation(the video)whereby differnt people speaks english differently acccording to thier background..example, where are they originally from.
group 5-the video clip which has been played at the beginning of their presentation. it shows on how an individual will speaks by using the taboo language and action without showing any respect to the eldery.for example, the way both of them greet the father.
4. Did the group manage to hold the attention/interest of the whole class? Explain how.
yes, by conducting Q@A section in order to test our understanding on that topic and group 5 managed to do create an interesting game whereby the aim of the game was to identified on how a taboo word can be turned into a proper word which is known as euphemism.
5. Did the presentation help you reflect, collaborate, ask questions, etc? Was it learning experience? Explain whether you got a better understanding of the topic?
yes,we was able to asked questions to get clarification and expressed our own examples and opinion on the topic which was being discussed. one of the most valuable information i've learned is on how english language can be turned into verb to noun and a brief explaination from group 5 on how 'food' is also categorised as taboo.
6. How would you have made the presentation better?
by doing more research and conduct an interesting section(Q@A).
Evaluation on Group 2
ReplyDelete1. Well, the aim of the presentation is to show the types of English speakers.
2. Yes, they have achieved their aim very well because in the end, we did know that there's different types of English Speaker, by showing a video clip at the end of the presentation was helpful for further understanding and of course they have used and showed the Braj B Kachru circle as a reference. The video clip really helped to explain more about their chosen topic. Mind Your Language!!!
3. The interesting part was the drama at the beginning, a drama where the characters don't understand each other language although everyone spoke English, the class actually enjoyed that part, and the video in the end, produced a lot of laughing noises in the class. I think there was no boring part in their presentation since the class really enjoyed the presentation from the beginning to the end.
4. As far as I concern, they managed to hold the attention of the whole class, there were discussions going on between the presenting group and the audiences, especially when Ashvin brought up the Braj B Kachrus' circle into the presentation.
5. Yes, the presentation did help to reflect and ask a lot of question... since the class had a lot to argue on that topic, especially on the varieties of English, dialects and accents, since these topic sounds similar with types of English speakers and it wasn totally a learning experience.
6. Well, I guess, I really would have used the McArthurs' circle instead of Braj B Kachrus' circle, since McArthurs' circle explain more about the types of English speakers.
Correction On No.5:
ReplyDelete"and it was totally a learning experience"... I really don't know from where the 'n' came!!!
Greetings everyone...and there we have it..all presentations have been presented.First of all, i would like to convey my deepest appreciation and congratulations to the groups that have presented.I have learn so much from you people.Let me begin with the first group:
ReplyDelete1.Christina and Kishor-Personally, i think the beginning was a bit abrupt because i couldn't guess what the topic was going to be about. However they managed to grab my attention during the 'acting' or a sketch if u call it.It was funny and the comical approach got into me, and it was interesting to see Christina trying to 'conquer' the world with her telescope..hehe..just joking Christina. They managed to get the audience involved however they could have had more activities. It would also have been more livelier if Kishor can talk more, but overall...i did learn something and thats the most important thing.
2.Kirenjit and Co-The opening act was good.I immediately know what you are about to present judging from your act.Being the first to present is nerve wrecking and not knowing what to expect adds up more..Nevertheless, they had good teamwork and confidence. They helped each other out. Some parts of the presentation are not smooth(probably due to the question's thrown at them..hehe)..but at the end of the presentation where the video was shown saved the presentation and it was a good ending too.Probably they can improve on the sound projection..because as they go on with the presentation, it was getting softer.
3.Manesh,Firdaus and Co-Good teamwork.Every member explained and did their part well and they helped each other. The visual aids that they showed was really good and interactive and funny as well because that will definitely helped to gain a much better understanding of the topic. They also managed to grab our attention with the last video of the spanish version of the mariah carey song..'I KEN LEE'..hahahahah.I definitely can relate to that. They also managed to handle situations and answer questions given by the members of the floor. However, they could have involved the audience more by asking them to participate in activities.Good content though..
4.andy,kaven,syah,husna- please feel free to comment about our presentation.I give myself 2.5 out of 5...hehe
5.Vicky-What can i say...it was well executed because she had all the information. Her content was good and clear except for certain parts like trying to identify the types of emotions through body language and expressions. She managed to get us all involved in her activities.I don't know about you but i personally love the last activity..hahaha.And i think she managed to make it interesting as well by asking the class some questions and asking some of the classmates to act out different types of para language.
So that's about it.Whatever it is..there's always room for improvement and practice makes perfect..but then again no ones perfect so why practice!!!hehehe..

Yes it was a learning experience because it helps us to ask question when Syah gave examples of taboo. Moreover we also able to give few examples like number 8 is consider as unlucky for Indians.
6. How would you have made the presentation better?
The presentation would be better if the sound projection of the video clip is more clear and loud. Moreover they could have asked the class to do research on that topic because it is an interesting topic to discuss.

ReplyDelete1. Briefly explain the aim of the presentation.
The aim of the presentation was about types of speakers all over the world. They have shown the differences of dialects from Nepal, Britain and Malaysia in starting of their presentation so, from here; I have had the basic understand of types of speakers around the world.
2. Do you think the group achieved their aim? yes/no. Explain.
From the start, they have achieved their aim by telling the class what their topic was about and on the second part, they did not achieved it because they couldn’t answered what the questions were asked by the audience and the questions from Ms. Sarada.
3. What was the most interesting/boring part of the presentation? Explain.
The most boring part was that they did not do and gave out enough research on the topic discussed and the interesting part was when they acted out on the beginning of their presentation, which was when Saneeta and Valar arrived at the KLIA airport and Kiren greeted them. But Kiren got puzzled because Saneeta was speaking in another language as she couldn’t answered what Saneeta was asking whereas Ashwin, a KLIA consultant (maybe) confused of answering Valar’s question of “How do you do?”.
4. Did the group manage to hold the attention/interest of the whole class? Explain how.
Their group did manage to hold the attention as we learnt something new towards the American, Canadian, Australian and British Englishes slangs and dialects. Valar had shown a slang of saying “Afternoon” in Australian English which was “Arvo” (If I’m not mistaken).
5. Did the presentation help you reflect, collaborate, ask questions, etc? Was it learning experience? Explain whether you got a better understanding of the topic?
The presentation did make me asked questions, which was to Kiren on the way she elaborate the differences between American and British Englishes. (I think) Also, it was a learning experience since we learnt something new throughout their presentation. They have elaborated quite well on the definition so it has made me gain new information for the topic discussed.
6. How would you have made the presentation better?
I would suggest they could explained more about the topic discussed as some points they did not explain much and they could do more research according to their topic of types of speakers. Also, they could do a powerpoint presentation on brief explanation of the topic discussed.
2nd group comment: Christina and Kishor
ReplyDelete1. Briefly explain the aim of the presentation.
The aim of the presentation was about the spread of English. Christina and Kishor differentiate on about American and British English during their presentation. They also have used the Streven’s World Map of English and McArthur’s Circle of World English.
2. Do you think the group achieved their aim? yes/no. Explain.
Yes, I would say they have achieved their aim as they have elaborated on the colonisation of the conqueror, William and especially when Christina acted with her “telescope” in conquering some countries such as Bangladesh, India and Africa (if I’m not mistaken) to be colonised by.
3. What was the most interesting/boring part of the presentation? Explain.
The most interesting part was when Christina acted to be William, the conqueror by using the “paper” telescope and the way she said “We want this place,” when she travelled around the world.
4. Did the group manage to hold the attention/interest of the whole class? Explain how.
Yes, they did grab the attention of the whole class as they have conquered some countries in class (they grabbed few students to become their examples of countries) also, they elaborate on the borrowed words from all over the world such as Malaysian words would be orang utan, batik and sarongs whereas for French borrowed word, it is croissant and Italian would be piano. They also explained about the accents and slang used and the way these differentiate from one another.
5. Did the presentation help you reflect, collaborate, ask questions, etc? Was it learning experience? Explain whether you got a better understanding of the topic?
They did collaborate when they wanted they explained the borrowed words from Malaysian, French and Italian as well as, they organised an activity for the class do. It was placing a British or American flag on the colonised countries all over the world and yet, it was a learning experience since I got a better understanding towards the topic discussed.
6. How would you have made the presentation better?
I would prefer Kishor to talk more in the presentation and would also prefer Christina to understand more on about the differentiation towards slang and dialects.
4th group comment: Manesh, Ambiga and Firdaus
ReplyDelete1. Briefly explain the aim of the presentation.
The aim of the presentation was elaborating the world language. They also have explained the types of Englishes such as Canadian, Australian, American and British.
2. Do you think the group achieved their aim? yes/no. Explain.
Yes, the group did achieved their aim as they have supplied better understanding when watching the videos shown during their presentation especially on the video of a community who are learning to speak English and the “what are you sinking?”. (that was funny)
3. What was the most interesting/boring part of the presentation? Explain.
The interesting part of the presentation was when they show the videos of people speaking the language of English and the understanding of it as the last videos were hilarious on the part where the singer imitates Mariah Carey’s song instead of singing the real, better English pronunciations song, “I Ken Lee,” also the Germans listening to the radio.
4. Did the group manage to hold the attention/interest of the whole class? Explain how.
The group manage to hold the attention as they presented and gave a better understanding and knowledge when explained in their slideshow presentation.
5. Did the presentation help you reflect, collaborate, ask questions, etc? Was it learning experience? Explain whether you got a better understanding of the topic?
Yes, one of the group members, Firdaus made me asked questions when he explained the technology used in the distribution of organisations and diplomatic relations. But, it was a learning experience since the explanations explained grabbed my attention in having a better knowledge towards the topic discussed.
6. How would you have made the presentation better?
I would suggest they could asked the class questions whether we understand what they have elaborated or do activities for us to have some cooperation during their presentation.
6th group comment: Vicky
ReplyDelete1. Briefly explain the aim of the presentation.
The aim of the presentation was about explaining what was paralanguage was about. It is actually a non-verbal aspect of speech which categorised in three categories – facial expressions, body language and tone of vocal.
2. Do you think the group achieved their aim? yes/no. Explain.
She did achieve her aim by elaborating the topic very clear and well through the elements of paralanguage such as the pitch, resonance, tempo and volume of the vocal tone.
3. What was the most interesting/boring part of the presentation? Explain.
The most interesting part when she showed a video of “Mister Duncan.” It was about learning the intonation and pronunciation of a word and sentence, for example, “I am happy.” So, this would sound in a happy voice with the correct pronunciation pronounced.
4. Did the group manage to hold the attention/interest of the whole class? Explain how.
She did manage to hold the attention of the whole class as we participated in the intonation activity of Julia Roberts’s shopping video. It was when Vicky played it in mute and we had to act as what the video had shown before. Besides that, she also gave few of the class to play as a role of acting with movements and clues, they were, Ambiga acted as a boring student, Syah whom just won a lottery and Firdaus, a gay person who asked his girlfriend or boyfriend out. (That was the funniest part..hehe)
5. Did the presentation help you reflect, collaborate, ask questions, etc? Was it learning experience? Explain whether you got a better understanding of the topic?
The presentation did collaborate when Vicky told us to participate in the activities involved by the whole class such as the acting of Julia Roberts’s video, the role of movements done by three students and the part of identifying the emotions – intonation slides.
6. How would you have made the presentation better?
I would prefer Vicky to explain clearly about the intonation slides, it was when she told us to guess how the emotions would sound like with the particular descriptions showed in the slides.
Christina & Kishore – Topic: English as a World Language. Information is presented in an interesting way on slides especially the one on the type of speakers around the world. The intro (acting – conquering) took up a bit of time where I think they could have done it in lesser time. I love the part where we suppose to identify the countries ‘conquered’ by the British and America by pasting little flags on the world map. I had fun and it certainly helped me relate to it. The presentation can be better if they can discuss more about the role of English as a world language, some issues that some countries face (like why Japan and Russia keep to their own language as the official language) and what does it take for a language to become world language. - Vicki-
ReplyDeleteAndy, kaven, syah, husna – Topic: Taboo and Euphemism. I would say you guys have put in tremendous effort and the teamwork really shows when everyone put in their best. The entree (Who 1 2 be a millionaire)was a good one to lead us into the topic. I certainly feel a bit ‘annoyed’ being asked questions which are ‘taboo’ to me. The video clip was something I can relate to personally as it has a ‘local’ touch to it. It can be better if it has subtitles. I was a little lost towards the end where we are suppose to guess the ‘taboo’ word by having a volunteer give us the clue in forms of Euphemism. Perhaps it is better to give more ‘general’ examples that we would use every day. - Vicki
ReplyDeletewow, long comments over here.. and its just too much to read.. i going to keep it short.. (lazy to type =) sorry ms sarada!)
ReplyDeletegroup 4- Good points: excellent effort, your message/discussion was clear about eng as a world lang. but i think ambiga talked the most and her group members did not contribute much. you'll should have divided the "talking" equally like what i and my members did (perasaan!) but seriously, this is for everyone, if u cant speak well (grammar, pronunciation....) don't worry.. they have a say in BM 'belum cuba belum tahu'. so try and keep trying harder ...
group 5: MY GROUP!! hu-raay.. BRAVO!! good job ppl, we had a tough time coming up with activities. glad you ppl enjoyed and gave full support to us. really amazed with the discussion that was conducted after the presentation.. thank u!
